Hi,
My name is Nelson Goldner. The handsome guy next to me is MAX.

October 2003, in New York City, I had my left hip replaced. June of 2004, I had my left knee replaced. It was a year plus out of my life spent in recuperation and rehab! I did well but it took a long time to get back to normal.

In 2008 my right side, hip and knee, needed replacement surgery. Living in Sarasota, I elected to consult with Dr. Stolarski.

In our initial meeting, I was just about to ask Dr. Stolarski if there was any chance that he would replace both the hip and the knee at one time. Before I could ask the question, Dr. Stolarski asked me if I would be willing to have both surgeries, total hip and total knee replacements done in one operation. He told me that he used an anterior approach for the hip surgery (front entry) and it would be a much easier operation than the posterior operation (entry from the rear) which was the approach used in my first hip replacement.

I readily agreed. Dr. Stolarski said that I appeared to be in good physical condition and my attitude was positive.

The surgery went well. My stay at Doctor's Hospital was stress free and as nice as a hospital stay could be.

The first 6 weeks after surgery I was miserable. I expected this. Then, after 6 weeks, I turned the corner and have not looked back since. About 4 months after surgery I am very active. I am playing tennis, not ready for the US Open, but starting to play and enjoy doing so. I have more energy than I have had in years. I think that comes from less pain in my body. I actually feel good. Two new hips and two new knees have made a difference.

My new knee is a bit stiff but I have no pain.

The anterior approach for my hip surgery was very easy. I cannot believe I had surgery. I highly recommend this anterior approach, after having both methods done. As I understand it, no muscles are cut in the anterior approach. This eliminated a lot of the post op anguish.

My suggestion to anyone thinking about this type of surgery is to try and keep your weight down and be in as good a physical condition before surgery. Prehab makes rehab much easier. And, see Dr. Stolarski. He really knows his business.

Last but not least, James DellaVecchia, Dr. Stolarski's PA is really a fine professional. He is knowledgeable, caring and a good guy.

Good luck, and having a dog like MAX by your side, and a wonderful wife like my wife Laurin, who took great care of me, made this surgery a successful event.

It's inconceivable to me why anyone in otherwise good condition would choose anything but non-invasive surgery done by Dr. Stolarski. It has been six weeks since surgery and there is nothing I cannot do other than a mountain climb (too tiring.) And lot better than before! The man is a genius! I do wish that I had known that I would be swollen for a few days. Might have prevented the "OMG, they made me fat!" My PTs in Boca Grande deserve a lot of credit as does a husband who expected to be served dinner the day I got home (day three!) -I just realized that my age and body type are relevant: A slender seventy-two.

Here I am, almost five months after having both knees replaced and I feel ready to dance again.....well almost ready. I want to thank Dr. Stolarski and his staff for all the positive energy and encouragement. I think I worked even harder in rehab because, I believed I could have a great result, because you all believed it too. In the beginning, the rehab was very difficult and I used to call the Physical Therapist the Physical Terrorist. Now I have a big smile on my face because I just got back from a 28 day cruise on a huge ship. When I left, I wondered how I was going to handle all the walking and stair climbing just 4 months after surgery. It turned out to be a wonderful thing because if I wanted to eat, I had to walk, walk, walk. By the second week of the cruise, I was amazed at the improvement in my walking speed and stability. I guess if I had any advice for someone going through this surgery, I would tell them to work as hard as they can in rehab....the results are worth it. Thank you all again for making my world bigger again and my life a little easier.

Blair,

The knees picture (Left) is our friend Willie who had both his knees replaced 8 years ago (2000) by Dr. Booth - University of PA. He will be 83 years old in November and he has been playing tennis ever since. You can see his scars where they cut the tendon. He is Ulli's inspiration for having both knees done together. As the picture indicates you can hardly see his scars.

I thought Dr. Stolarski would enjoy seeing the knees shot.

Dr. Stalarski:
Months of relentless worry and pain finally convinced me at 92 that I must undergo a hip replacement. Dr Stalarski was recommended highly by former patients and I put myself in his care. In less than an hour operation he gave me the ability to walk again free of pain. Dr. Stalarski is one who takes the time to explain things and o answer questions. He is the Best

Dear Dr. Stolarski,
I want to thank you so much for your incredible skill as a surgeon, your great sense of humor and up beat attitude and being a genuine, caring, and approachable human being. This experience of having bilateral hip replacement surgery was challenging and humbling. I could not have gone through it if I did not have 100% faith in you. You inspire that level of trust, faith and respect. You have an incredible gift that you bless the world with and I am so happy I found my way to you. I feel like I am getting my life back and I look foreword to doing so many activities that were lost to me -hiking, dancing, je skiing, yoga just to name a few. How can I thank you. I will be glad to talk to future patients about the experience and I have been telling everyone how great you are and that you are "the man" for hips and knee.
Thanks for everything

George Hawley at the 17th St. softball field getting ready to hit. This is a story of my new right hip. I think it's pretty interesting. When I tell people about it, they all want to know more. Maybe you'll think so too. I'm now 71. I had an artificial hip installed about 19 weeks ago. I wasn't in favor of doing this but there were compelling reasons. Let me tell you about it. I'm a senior softball player in Sarasota, FL where there are about 240 other guys over the age of 60 like me in our local senior softball association... Read More

Dear Dr. Stolarski,
This is an update on my progress with the right hip replacement that you executed on March 27 last. As you may recall, one of my goals was to be able to continue to play softball at a respectable level of skill without the accompanying arthritic pain. I am happy to report that so far everything is going well. Our winter season began last week and I played in double headers on Monday and Friday without incident. My running is adequate for the purpose and still improving. There is no associated pain. I continue to perform rehabilitative exercises in our condo pool three mornings a week and I do weight work on the alternate three mornings along with crunches and stretching exercises. This regime seems to e serving me well. I have maxxed out the leg press machine and am getting there with the leg extensions. …

All the best,
George Hawley

To whom it may concern:

Re: Experience of my total left hip replacement.

For two years I was in so much pain I could hardly walk. I had been eating Motrin like it was my favorite chocolate candy. Finally, the time came that I had to use a cane. That was it. I am only 64 years old. I will not become a cripple. I work full time, take care of my home, clean my pool, and I love to garden.

My husband went on-line and found information on the hip replacement procedure that jimmy Connors had done; it seemed far less daunting then conventional hip replacement surgery. Then I sought out Dr. Stolarski, the only orthopedist in Sarasota offering that particular prosthesis. I though the office staff was very nice and helpful. They basically handled everything in regards to my surgery. I was to have a total left hip replacement with only a four inch frontal incision. No damage to muscles or nerves. It was scheduled for April 14th.

Was I scared? Yes, but off to the operating room I went. I was able to see the replacement joint and ask questions before I went to sleep. Back in my room several hours later, I felt no pain. They do not let you.

The next day I was walking with a walker in the halls of the hospital. By that afternoon the walker went and I used crutches. Two days later, I walked out of the hospital using only a cane. I can tell you that I did great. Took nothing for pain and walked around the block a few days later.

I built my strength and went back to work part-time four weeks later. Went to Boston to visit our daughter early in June and went back to work full time on June 17.

I cannot speak highly enough about Dr. Stolarski and his P.A., James. In face, I am thinking I will have them do my right knee next spring.

Sincerely, Penny Calltharp

I met Dr. Edward Stolarski at a "hip+knee" meeting and I was very impressed. He operated on my left knee on 10/18/07 ( I can't say enough about all the preparations made by Dr S. and Joan Ferrie, his surgical coordinator. 2 ½ days at Dr's Hospital - 10 days at a rehab center for heavy therapy. Went home and was able to drive to-from the rehab center for 3 more months. After that I took swimming exercises for several months. ( all this time - walking -walking, at least ½ a mile each day) office visits were great - always in and out and everyone was so helpful.

Folks, this was no picnic! At first the pain was extrodanary = then wekk by week it ecame better. Keep in mind this is a foreign object in your knee- took a lot of therapy and swimming and walking before it became "contented" in my knee I was able to go back to volunteering in jan '08. The reason being an excellent operation and an excellent doctor and an excellent patient who did what she was told to do. I walk each day and am glad to.
